Salzburg mit Aai
6th- 7th Aug 2005, we went to Austria- Salzgurg. It is just adjoining Baveria(in Germany) and only one and half hours by train from Munich.
Beautiful Alpine country. To be frank it was the most beautiful places I have visited till now. Lot of historican importance
and abundance of Scenic beauty.
We saw the mountain Villages of Alps and also went to the place where Hitler had his summer retreat (Eagle's nest) But we did not go till Eagles nest(bad weather)
It was built by his party people as a 50th birthday present for him.Thought Hitler himself never stayed here, he was afraid ogf heights !!! (Claustrophobia)
His wife Eva Braun always used to come here it seems.
This was the only place which escapped the bombing in worldwar II, simply because the allied forces could not locate it in the midst of snow coverd mountains.
we also went into the Salt Mines on top of Alp mountains(dressed up as miners) Yes Salt is taken out from Mountain , and not sea.
Some Geological phenomenon...better left to Gold medalistts in Geology !!!!!! (who cares salt comes from mountain or sea, it should be edible thats all)
You know what, now it is sravan mas and aai did not bring Sendalavan (meeth) with her for eating when doing upwaas. So she was thinking she can take it
and use it. I also think it is the same, atleast looks the same.
Next day we went to the largest Ice caves in the world. You are taken into the caves by a guide and it is full of Ice - Natural formation.
It was a very dangerous place and had 700 steps inside the cave. Infact you climb to the top of the mountain from with in the dark extreemly cold cave.
There is Ice hanging from top and huge formations from beloe. you have to carefully pass through them in freezing cold.
I did not realise how aai would be able to do it. Initially she said she wont come but my friend said ok we will just go in and see, if it is too cold you can come out and sit and we will go.
But once insiide we just kept going.
We went into a small village Hallstadt , in the middle of the mountains (total population of 1200 people)
still the traditionla way of living. One very peculiar thing about this place is , in one of the cathiolic cemetries, there is a room where thousands of skulls are kept.
On asking our guide told , this is a very small place with smaller graveyard. So because of lack of space, every grave is dug up after 10 years and the bigger bones thrown in sea and only skuill is chemically treated and preserved. last skull was kept in 1996. But now a days more and more cremations are takeing place ( no buring), ofcourse still some people prefer to be buried.
We also saw the birth place of legendary musician Mozart.
Remember the English movie The Sound of Music...it was shot in Salzburg, and still there are
Sound of Music tours which take you through the places where the film was shot. ( we did not take this tour)
The people of Austria are really blessed, it is a very very beautiful place
It was a very good trip.
But after all this , I should say, aai has extreemly great stamina and will power,
when we were in Paris, we walked a lot and everybody was very very tired.
Infact one of my friends got fever. But aai did not complain at all. In fact after coming back from Paris she cooked for us.
and here also we were all complaining about how steep the mountain is and how cold it is, but aai was like just walking in house. Not complaining at all.
So amongst all of here she was the strongest !!!
